côte&ciel x Joel Wilson “Sonic Bags” For Parasound by Will Pegna, London, Whitechappel Gallery

Our mission has always extended beyond creating bags. We seek out opportunities to support visionaries who challenge boundaries and reshape the worlds they inhabit, be that in fashion, art, or performance. This ethos came to life in our recent collaboration with artist Will Pegna, as part of his evocative contemporary research platform, All Terrain Training (ATT).
Having collaborated previously with the London based artist on our COURIER project in Cologne, a performance that ran adjacent to his All Terrain Training practices, it is a full circle moment to connect again. This time, developing custom collaborative bags alongside designer Joel Wilson, for Will Pegna’s Parasound series, debuting in London.
Presented at the esteemed Whitechapel Gallery in London, Parasound marked a pivotal moment in Pegna’s exploration of athleticism, ritual, and collective potential. We were proud to support this independent artist not only by providing functional design solutions, but by contributing creatively to the visual and spatial narrative of the performance, using over 50 meters of our iconic nylon to drape across the metal structure built.

Parasound is not easily defined, it sits somewhere between choreography, sound installation, and ritual. Developed under Pegna’s research-led ATT series, the performance explored “athletic expansion” through sonic interactions and movement-based rituals.
One of the core design challenges we were invited to solve was deceptively simple: how do you make sound wearable? Collaborating with London-based designer Joel Wilson, we reimagined pre-existing côte&ciel silhouettes into bespoke, performance-ready pieces. The resulting bags were striking yet rugged, each one embodying the utilitarian aesthetic of Pegna’s imagined world, where the performers exist somewhere between a sports team and an industrial crew.
The bags featured binding, cinching, industrial hardware, and climbing elements such as ropes and carabiners. Each was hand-finished with a dying process and climbing chalk, adding a weathered tactility that grounded the designs in the raw, ritualistic energy of the performance.

At the heart of the work was a modular metal environment designed by Berlin-based architect Daryan Knoblauch, which divided and later unified the gallery space. The performers, equipped with wearable speaker systems concealed inside custom côte&ciel bags, navigated this world through evolving soundscapes composed by Max Frimout. The result was a living system of movement and sound, one where the performers’ physical interactions created waves of sonic and emotional connection.
The project was a dialogue, a merging of disciplines and creative minds, all contributing to a singular performance moment. We are honoured to have worked alongside Will Pegna, Joel Wilson, and the wider team in crafting something that lives at the intersection of design, performance, and storytelling.
Parasound is a perfect example of how design can be fluid, adaptive, and alive.
